Branch, AppsFlyer OneLink, Adjust, LinkTrail or plain Universal Links? What each does best, what it costs, what it gives up, and how to choose.

A disclosure first: this is LinkTrail's blog, and LinkTrail is on the list. To keep it useful anyway, every option below includes what it's best at and what it gives up, the facts come from the same comparison tables we publish on our compare pages, and the list says plainly when you shouldn't pick us.

Pricing and features change. Our comparisons reflect each vendor's public positioning at our last review — check current pricing with the vendor before you commit.

What should a deep linking tool do?

Opening an installed app from a link is free: that's Universal Links and App Links. What you pay a tool for is the rest:

  • Deferred deep linking — carrying the link's destination through an install, so a new user's first open lands on the right screen.
  • Smart routing — one link that sends iOS, Android and desktop to the right place.
  • Attribution — knowing which link, campaign and channel produced each install.
  • Hosted association files — the AASA and assetlinks.json generated and kept current for you.

The shortlist at a glance

Branch

Branch pioneered mobile deep linking and is a capable, enterprise-grade platform used by a very large number of brands. It covers deferred deep linking, attribution, SKAdNetwork and hosted association files, with the widest SDK matrix in the group — iOS, Android, web, React Native, Flutter, Unity and Cordova — and a partner ecosystem of 80+ platforms.

Trade-offs: paid pricing isn't published and goes through sales; onboarding is sales-assisted. LinkTrail vs Branch has the full table.

AppsFlyer is the market-leading mobile measurement partner, and OneLink is its deep linking product. Beyond linking and attribution it offers data clean rooms, incrementality and marketing mix modelling, and the largest integration marketplace in the category. Pricing is refreshingly transparent for the category, with a free tier and usage-based paid pricing.

Trade-offs: per-conversion pricing gets less predictable as volume grows, and it's a large suite to operate if linking is all you need. LinkTrail vs AppsFlyer has the details.

Adjust

Adjust, part of AppLovin, is a mature measurement platform with deep linking, a dedicated fraud-prevention suite, and open-source SDKs across 16 platforms.

Trade-offs: pricing is quote-based by monthly tracked users, and onboarding is sales-assisted. See LinkTrail vs Adjust.

LinkTrail

LinkTrail focuses on deferred deep linking, smart routing and install attribution, with SDKs for iOS, Android, React Native and Flutter. Every tier is published — free to 5,000 monthly active users, then $19 and $49 a month, plus a custom Scale tier — and there are no overage fees. It never reads advertising identifiers, gates attribution behind consent by default, and publishes its attribution methodology.

Trade-offs: a smaller integration ecosystem and SDK matrix than the big suites, no clean rooms or marketing mix modelling, and ad-network integrations that are inbound only — click IDs and cost imports, no postbacks. If you need those, one of the three above is the better choice.

The operating systems' own links are free: host the apple-app-site-association and assetlinks.json files and an installed app opens straight from a link.

Trade-offs: no deferred deep linking — a new user lands on the home screen after installing — no smart routing across platforms from one link, no attribution, and the association files are yours to maintain. Test them with the free Universal Links validator.

Other tools worth a look

Singular, Airbridge and Kochava also offer deep linking alongside mobile measurement, and a number of newer, smaller link tools have appeared since Firebase Dynamic Links shut down. We haven't published a comparison of them, so we'll leave the assessment to their own documentation.

How to choose

  1. 1Do you need deferred deep linking or attribution? If not, self-hosted Universal Links and App Links may be enough.
  2. 2Do you need a full marketing cloud — clean rooms, incrementality, MMM, a large partner marketplace? Look at AppsFlyer, Adjust or Branch.
  3. 3Do you want published pricing and self-serve setup? LinkTrail, or AppsFlyer's usage pricing.
  4. 4Which platforms do you ship? Check SDK coverage for every one, including Unity or web if you need them.
  5. 5Coming from Firebase Dynamic Links? The migration guide covers what to replace.

For each vendor's alternatives side by side, see Branch alternatives, AppsFlyer alternatives and Adjust alternatives.

Questions about this post

What is the best deep linking tool?

It depends on what you need. Branch, AppsFlyer and Adjust are broad platforms with large integration ecosystems and enterprise support; LinkTrail focuses on deep linking and attribution with published pricing and self-serve setup; self-hosted Universal Links and App Links are free if links only need to open an installed app.

Is there a free deep linking tool?

Universal Links and App Links are free if you host the association files yourself, but they can't carry a link through an install. LinkTrail's Free plan covers 5,000 monthly active users and 25,000 clicks a month; AppsFlyer and Adjust have limited free tiers, and Branch offers a free trial.

What replaced Firebase Dynamic Links?

Nothing from Google. Universal Links and App Links cover direct deep linking; deferred deep linking, smart routing and attribution now need a third-party tool such as those in this list.
